Real Wedding: Sophie & Ben's Modern Country ACT Wedding

Sophie’s mothers beautiful engagement ring inspired the couples colour palette. Made of Colombian and Australian sapphires, rubys and diamonds, Sophie mainly used blue as the main colour and added in hints of pink and lush greens.

Sophie and Ben were introduced by mutual friends at a bar in Sydney. They had five years of a long-distance relationship while Sophie studied in Orange and Ben worked in Sydney. Ben mentioned during his wedding speech that they had travelled 57000 km visiting each other which equals one and a half trips around the world.

Ben popped the question when Sophie was in her final year of university. His mother suddenly passed away when he was 16 and they often went to visit her grave. He proposed during one of their visits to his mother's grave as he wanted to make sure his mother was included in the marriage as Sophie never got to meet her.

It was highly emotional and very beautiful way to ask me to marry him!

- Sophie

The bride wore a breath-taking off-the-shoulder wedding gown by Nicolina, purchased from Annabels Bridal in Canberra. Sophie styled the gown with Badgley Mischka shoes and a colourful bouquet featuring garden roses, peonies, dahlias, hydrangea and zinnias. The suits for the groom and his wedding party were purchased at MJ Bale, while the bridesmaids wore Camilla and Marc dresses.

Sophie’s engagement ring was created by Dan and Jim from Robert Cliff Master Jewellers, she also wore her mother’s engagement ring with Colombian and Australian sapphires, rubies and a diamond as her “something borrowed”. This vintage ring was inspiration for the wedding colour scheme. Sophie asked her florist to work with blues, pinks and lush greens to create vibrant arrangements for the reception and bouquets.

From the spectacular ceremony decorations to the floral crowns made for the flower girls, the bright blooms looked stunning in the wedding photos and all of the guests commented on them. The floral arbour made for the ceremony was later used as a backdrop for Instagram prints which the couple had as a special surprise for their friends and family. Other striking details included a bespoke cake topper which cost about $500 and was ordered from the United States, and DIY welcome cards with a list of places to eat and things to do in Canberra.

The couple hosted their wedding reception at Poachers Pantry near Canberra. “One day their ad appeared on my Facebook and I instantly fell in love with the venue”, said Sophie. “I grew up on a farm and Ben loves our visits to country fields, so the venue really felt perfect to us.” Since Poachers Pantry is renowned for their amazing cuisine, the menu was very special and included some of the venue’s most popular dishes such as balsamic poached eye fillet and smoked chicken breast with truffle and gnocchi.
