Julia and Michael met through mutual friends when they were 18 and 20 and had an instant connection. Julia's family had moved overseas after she had finished high school. Beginning to feel homesick for her mother’s wonderful Vietnamese cooking, Julia asked friends to join her at a local Vietnamese restaurant. One of them brought a new friend, Michael. “I was struck at first sight, and we were pretty much inseparable, in heart if not physically ever since”, says Julia.
After years of dating, finishing their studies and travelling, Julia and Michael moved in together in Canberra and adopted their fur babies, Snowy the Japanese Spitz and Tintin the rescue kitten. Michael proposed on April 1st 2015 with his grandmother’s beautiful solitaire diamond engagement ring. It was an important date for Michael as his grandfather proposed to his grandmother on the very same day. He added his own flair to the proposal and started the day with an April fools joke which involved fake spiders! To make up for upsetting her all morning, he went to the kitchen to make breakfast, but presented the ring box instead. She said yes after having checked it wasn’t a joke.
The ceremony was held at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Forrest, Canberra as it had been a significant church for Julia and her family. The bride walked down the aisle in a strapless satin gown by Cristiano Lucci from Enchanté Bridal and Formal Wear and it was accessorised with Badgley & Mischka shoes, Swarovski earrings which were a gift from her friends, a 4-metre veil, a colourful silk flower bouquet and Julia's mothers bracelet and necklace which represented her “something borrowed”. The “something blue” was a lace garter which her maid of honour bought for her in Venice, long before the engagement. Unique details included small charms with photos of her and Michael’s parents attached to the bouquet, as well as a small photo of Michael and his mother sewed into his suit.
Their reception venue was the Great Hall of the Australian National University in Canberra as they both completed their tertiary studies there. Fairy lights suspended across the ceiling transformed the room and made it seem magical, and their gold luxe theme was ideal for this space. From sourcing decorations to designing the stationery and bomboniere, Julia did most of the work herself. After researching a lot of websites and magazines including The Bride’s Diary®, she decided to go for a colour palette of gold, cream, pink and maroon.
The gold sequined table runners Julia purchased overseas, and the centrepieces were beautiful posies with roses that matched the bouquets and LED lighting was added to brighten up the tables in the evening. Julia particularly enjoyed designing the seating chart which featured a large gilded mirror with small frames making up the guest tables. Each table had a gold frame with a table number designed by Michael (with printed flowers to match the theme) with their bomboniere doubled as the place card. It was home-made jam presented in glass jars with DIY labels featuring the guest’s name.
They had two amazing wedding cakes at the reception. The first one was a traditional tiered cake with gold, white and quilted fondant decorated with silk flowers to match the bouquets, while the second one was a French croquembouche, a tradition of Michael’s family.
The reception venue looked as amazing as I had envisioned in my mind, with gold glittering subtly and fairy lights twinkling in the sea of cream, pink and maroon flowers. I wish we could relive it, it truly was the wedding of my dreams.
