Belinda and John met on January 12, 2008, were engaged on May 12, 2012 and tied the knot on July 12, 2014. It must be that 12 is their lucky number! Their first encounter occurred in a bar in Melbourne when they spotted each other in the crowd. Belinda said to her friend, “I’m going to make that guy my boyfriend”. He approached her and they started talking. After a few dates they became an item and got engaged in 2012.
Belinda and John do everything as a team, so their engagement was not a surprise and, of course, they picked the ring together. John kept it in a secret location in the house until he proposed on a Saturday night, on May 12. They decided to wed in the middle of the European summer and the planning began right after the engagement in 2012.
With John’s Greek heritage and Belinda’s Italian origins, the couple decided to organise a destination wedding in Greece, followed by a honeymoon in Italy, France and Dubai. With amazing architecture, a great urban vibe and sense of life, Athens was the perfect city to tie the knot. The bride and groom were very happy to host their guests in beautiful Athens and treat them with a wonderful holiday overseas.
Belinda and John had a traditional Orthodox Greek wedding ceremony at the beautiful Saint Dionysios Areopagite church. The reception took place in their favourite Hotel Grande Bretagne where they had been staying since 2010 and simply fell in love with it. It is a very elegant, luxurious hotel that boasts spectacular views of the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, the Parliament and the original Olympic Stadium.
With help of their wonderful wedding planner, Maria Koutzabasi who is the Groups & Events Executive at Hotel Grande Bretagne, Belinda and John organised a fabulous reception. She helped them in every aspect of planning including choosing the reception food and the wedding cake, arranging flowers and decorations, finding hair and make-up stylists, booking the DJ and organising transportation on the day.
On the day of the wedding the reception room of Hotel Grande Bretagne looked very stylish with gorgeous chandeliers creating a romantic atmosphere and round tables covered with crisp white linen and decorated with white floral centrepieces. It was a fabulous interior for a glamorous reception, offering amazing backdrops for wedding photography.
One of the most important details was, of course, the wedding dress! Belinda wore a show-stopping strapless ball gown in vibrant red from Vera Wang’s spring 2013 collection. The colour red is very popular with Chinese brides as they believe it symbolises love, good fortune and joy, and Belinda knew that it was the perfect shade for her as soon as she tried the dress on. She saw the gown on the website first and immediately knew that she wanted to wear it on her big day.
It was made in white and cardinal red, but Belinda wanted the second one and didn’t think twice about wearing the red dress to her wedding. She had to fly back and forth from Melbourne to Sydney for dress fittings and the staff at Vera Wang’s store had told her that she was the only customer to have ordered the dress in red. Belinda styled the dress with a pair of bright red crystal studded shoes from Benjamin Adams and a golden hair accessory, while John wore a Dior suit with sparkly black loafers from Jimmy Choo.
