If you have always dreamt of getting married in a real castle, then Overnewton Castle is the perfect place to tie the knot and host your ceremony and wedding reception dinner. It is surrounded by pristine country landscapes and a beautifully maintained English garden and features graceful interiors and a non-denominational chapel. It is like no other venue you will find in Melbourne or anywhere in Australia!
The castle was originally built in 1849 by William Taylor who purchased 13,000 acres of land west of the township of Keilor. Inspired by 16th-century Scottish architecture and featuring steeped pitched roofs as well as overhanging battlement corner turrets and rough textured masonry, it is a fine example of the Victorian Tudor style architecture. Other distinctive features include candle snuffer roofs influenced by the French architecture, the bluestone walls rendered with a yellow gravel and stucco finish and the Taylor family crest above the large windows of the master bedroom.
Overnewton Castle aged with grace and even today remains to be as beautiful as it was in the 19th century. The majestic building is hidden away amongst the old trees and still looks elegant, charming and grandiose like in the time of horse-drawn carriages, gas lights and servants. It has been restored many times but it preserved the charm of a bygone era and it is definitely one of the best-hidden treasures you can find in Melbourne.
The garden is ideal for outdoor ceremonies and it is lovingly maintained to look beautiful year-round. It features some very old trees planted back in the 1850’s or after the World War II, and garden beds are planted with shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs and roses to provide year-round colour and fragrance. You can say your vows at the white wrought iron gazebo shipped over from Scotland in 1882, and if the weather is not ideal, there is also a gorgeous wedding chapel where you can tie the knot. When the sun goes down, the garden is illuminated with thousands of fairy lights and it looks incredibly romantic!
The large dining room is perfect for receptions as it features a breath-taking crystal chandelier and big windows which are filling the space with natural light. The beautiful bay window will shadow you as you sit to eat your first meal as husband and wife and during the night you will see the garden floodlit with fairy lights.
And since Overnewton Castle has an enviable reputation for tantalising wedding menus and exemplary service, rest assured that your celebration is one to remember!
