Along with the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Met Gala is one of the glitziest and fashion-forward events of the year. This year the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was brimming with bold colours, loads of shimmer and regal opulence. The exhibition was named “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and as always was hosted by Anna Wintour and co-hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace… Wow, wish we were there too!
The dresses were simply amazing! We saw superstars wearing halos, crosses, wings and crowns, and the main focus was on flamboyant evening gowns which were dramatic, voluminous and extravagantly embellished. Our favourite look was Blake Lively’s grandiose ballgown in burgundy-red designed by Atelier Versace which she paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and a couture bag by Judith Leiber. Our favourite bridal look was Kate Bosworth’s beautiful gown by Oscar de la Renta accessorised with a lace trimmed veil and Tacori jewellery.
The most talked-about gowns at the Met Gala 2018? Almost all of the looks were very extravagant, but a couple attracted a lot of media attention. One of the most controversial outfits was Rihanna’s “Pope” dress created by the notorious John Galliano for Maison Margiela. The look comprised a bejewelled mini dress, a matching coat and a papal-inspired headdress. The second dress that caught everybody’s eye was Sarah Jessica Parker’s breathtaking red heart-printed gown by Dolce & Gabbana featuring a sweeping train and puffed sleeves. The actress accessorised the dress with a towering altar-inspired crown and jewellery by Fred Leighton and Jennifer Fisher.
We hope you enjoy obsessing over these images as much as we did. While most gowns are too over the top to provide real wedding aisle-style inspiration, they definitely make you think about some of the possibilities.
