There isn’t many of us out there who didn’t grow up watching Disney movies and gasping whenever princesses Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White, Belle or Jasmine were dressed in their dazzling ball gowns. Their masterfully drawn dresses, shoes and hair-pieces never cease to inspire fashion designers around the globe and we are seeing numerous collections influenced by them.
This season, Paul Vasilieff, who stands behind Australia’s renowned label Paolo Sebastian has teamed up with Disney to create a high-end couture line-up inspired by fairy-tales. He visited the company’s studios in Los Angeles and browsed through their archives to see original sketches. He picked up a lot of ideas and the result was a spectacular show at the recent Adelaide Fashion Festival.
Named ‘Once Upon A Dream’, the spring/summer 2018 couture collection by Paolo Sebastian is special because the gowns are very ornate, featuring adorable cartoon motifs and even entire lines from Disney fairy tales which are sewn into the fabrics. There were so many astonishing wedding gowns in white, ebony, umber, light blue, blush pink, silver and gold shades, as well as many delightfully embellished colourful pieces and a few looks in black which you can wear to your big day or any other special event.
Every single dress we have seen at the fashion show in Adelaide was hand-made in Paul’s studio. Luxury French tulles and silk chiffons were adorned with stunning, very detailed embroideries which are depicting the most magical cartoon scenes with nightingales, enchanting florals, woodland creatures, glistening stars and even rhymes from iconic songs.
The looks are at the same time vintage and nostalgic and very modern. The silhouettes are very dramatic and yet ethereal with oversized skirts, illusion detailing sprinkled with crystals or tattoo-like embroideries, embellished billowy sleeves and sweeping trains which are sometimes contrasted with high slits and plunging necklines.
These couture dresses are complemented with intricately embellished shoes and styled with hair lightly curled into glamorous Hollywood-style waves. And it all looked incredible on a catwalk designed like an enchanting forest with flower canopies and narrow pathways lined with grass and white blooms.
