Giambattista Valli's couture collection for autumn 2017 was showcased at the picturesque enclosed garden of the Petit Palais art museum in Paris. This oasis of greenery was an ideal backdrop for the show because the dresses were showered with colourful flowers that were woven, printed or made from ruffles, sequins and pearls.
It all kicked off with an impressive line up of chic mini dresses that were adorned with crystals and macramé, followed by gorgeous high-and-low dresses made from chiffons, tulles and laces. The collection has a number of wonderful bridesmaid-style dresses in a myriad of colours including deep burgundies and purples, a rainbow of pale pinks, pastel oranges, crimson reds and lemon yellows. Moving away from the traditional wedding dress colour palette, these rich hues are very sophisticated, offering brides plenty of inspiration for developing their design scheme into something utterly chic and modern.
The draping and floral detailing on the dresses was superb, while the silhouettes included some innovative shapes with high waists, extremely low off-the-shoulder necklines and Grecian-style folds. One of the most interesting pieces from the collection was a metallic dress made from crystals, pearls and mirror sequins which would make a great outfit for a special occasion like an engagement party.
Giambattista Valli show closed with three dramatic high-low tulle ball gowns in blush pink, candy pink and black – all accessorised with satin ballerina pumps in black or purple. There was no wedding gown at the end of the show, but there were quite a few bridal looks including a sleeveless, embroidered tulle ball gown adorned with a vintage brooch or the pretty high-low eyelet lace dress with puffy sleeves and floral embellishments. And for brides who love combining two separates instead of wearing a classic wedding dress, there were white tulle skirts paired with floral tops.
The accessories? Giambattista Valli used vintage jewellery by Eleuteri to style the evening dresses and shoes included both satin ballet slippers and bejewelled 7-inch platform pumps. The make-up look featured a bright red lipstick which complemented every single gown from the collection, and the hair was neatly styled into a simple "no fuss" up-do.
