Elie Saab Haute Couture Autumn 2017/2018: The Tale Of Fallen Kings

The catwalk was awash of jewel-inspired hues and bold embellishments fit for a queen. The collection is a fairy-tale inspired by medieval royalty where fallen kings see bold feminine figures rise.

Introducing the new haute couture collection, Elie Saab invites us to “follow a fearless and heroic sisterhood, bright and brave warrior Queens, into a place of legends – a snow-covered kingdom where forgotten forests and stone-built castles tell stories of epic battles that have been fought, lost and won in a tale of fallen Kings.” Dresses are made from the most luxurious, heavy winter fabrics in rich and radiant jewel tones including ruby reds, sapphire blues and emerald greens, or from delicate, ethereal materials in soft creams and pastels adorned with bold, gleaming embellishments.

The dresses were accentuated with wide waistbands and styled with long capes or flamboyant fur stoles, while the silhouettes were very feminine. Sleek velvets were adorned with golden embroideries and models were wearing headpieces, necklaces and earrings reminiscent of medieval queens. Unique touches include girly bows on the neckline and mini velvet purses in a myriad of colours, but the novelty was also an embroidered kaftan worn with skirts, dresses and trousers.

In addition to satins, velvets and silk chiffons, there are also elaborate laces and translucent organzas which were embellished with colourful feathers to add more drama to the looks. The silhouettes will remind you of the costumes from Game of Thrones while the plunging necklines, bare shoulders, slits on skirts and sheer fabrics gave a contemporary feel to the collection.

While the closing look was a translucent black gown with black feathers and golden embellishments, there was a whole range of gorgeous bridal looks instead of just one ultimate piece. Our favourite wedding-worthy dresses? The strapless sheath gown worn with a ball gown overlay and a hooded cape, the sheer long-sleeved dress with floral embroidery and the beaded satin A-line gown.

Looking for hair and make-up inspiration for your wedding? Elie Saab’s models wore iridescent make-up with lots of shimmer around the eyes and very glossy lips, while the hair was loose, lightly curled and accessorised with a head piece or crown and statement earrings.
