Ralph & Russo Couture Autumn/Winter 2017/2018

The jaw-dropping collection comprises 56 different looks ranging from sparkly mini dresses to oversized ball gowns, slinky red-carpet looks and, of course, a flamboyant wedding dress which was the dramatic finale.

Inspired by the glitzy fashion photographs of Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson, designer Tamara Ralph wanted to give her own interpretation of vintage glamour. Ralph & Russo's latest couture collection encompasses everything from luxurious day pieces to dramatic eveningwear and bridal attire. The first look was an embroidered kimono-like top and white trousers, while the finale was a show-stopping wedding gown. And in the middle, there were tweed dresses, shimmery cocktail frocks and an impressive line-up of floor-sweeping evening gowns.

The focus was on the glamorous eveningwear accentuated with decadent embellishments such as multi-layered ruffles, feathers, metallic embroideries, oversized floral appliques, crystals and pearlescent beads. Slinky satin gowns in mauve and aquamarine could easily be worn as bridesmaid dresses, while the voluminous ball gowns in pale lilac, white and ombre make fantastic wedding dresses. Silky fringing combined with crystals, sequins and beads was a nod to the roaring twenties, while the bridal gown worn by Sonam Kapoor was influenced by Bollywood divas.

The wedding dress was definitely the most luxurious piece we have seen on the catwalk as it is made of Chantilly lace in champagne shade and features intricate embroidery in silver and gold, opulent florals, sequins and pearlescent microbeads that took about 6,000 hours to sew by hand. The dress was styled with an equally elaborate headpiece made from embroidered tulle.

Other wedding-worthy gowns were in very light colours and included a white amethyst and silver gown with an ornate floral print, bell sleeves and organza plisse flowers. Another wedding worthy is the white and mint ombre ball gown featuring tiers of feather applique and glass bead clusters and the incredibly romantic platinum Chantilly lace cape dress with godets and mint chiffon ruffles which are hand-embroidered with opal crystals, beads and mini floral sequins.

The look Ralph & Russo acheived was highly sophisticated evening glamour, with the hair, make-up and accessories a significant part of the overall look. The iridescent gowns were complemented by metallic high-heel pumps and clutch bags, neatly sculpted up-dos and a dramatic eyeliner and a pearly pink lipstick.
