The theme for the 2017 Met Gala was “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” celebrating Japanese designer renowned for cutting-edge, avant-garde designs that are somewhere between fashion and art. She is the second designer that is still alive to be honoured by an exhibition in this museum after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.
The Met Gala is one of the key events of New York’s fashion calendar, and it is often referred to as “the party of the year”. This year, the red carpet line-up was extraordinary and full of surprises as many celebrities opted for conceptual outfits inspired by Kawakubo’s work, but our favourite looks were the decadent evening gowns in a rainbow of colours!
We particularly love how Katie Holmes matched her blue smoky eye with her navy Zac Posen gown. The dress had an off-the-shoulder, mermaid silhouette and featured a ruffled train and structured folds at the neckline.
Kate Hudson was head-to-toe in bridal white! She wore an asymmetric Stella McCartney gown, and even dyed her hair white and styled it in a bun. The dress revealed one shoulder and featured a long flared sleeve ruffled at the wrist. To match the dress, she wore mismatched earrings.
Emily Ratajkowski looked stunning in a shimmery sequined blue and green dress designed by Marc Jacobs. We love the painterly, ocean-inspired hues and the sexy fit-and-flare silhouette!
Stella Maxwell’s dress by H&M was embellished with hundreds of white pearls which elegantly moved as she walked. Featuring a deep V-neck and a satin underskirt in a soft nude shade, we think it would make a pretty wedding dress alternative!
Dakota Johnson rocked a black Gucci dress featuring ruffles, oversized flowers, dramatic cut-outs and a plunging neckline. She finished off the look with diamond and emerald earrings and a statement ring by Cartier.
Kendall Jenner’s La Perla Haute Couture dress was revealing and very seductive with a bold front cutout and bare back. The frock was made from a single piece of thin nylon string and embellished with 85,000 crystals. It was tastefully styled with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a bold red lip.
Emma Roberts wore a bright red satin dress by Diane Von Furstenberg which featured spaghetti straps, lace detailing on the neckline and charmeuse-covered buttons. The gown looked even more elegant with her pink fur stole and her pink and red velvet bag!
Kylie Jenner’s translucent and intricately embellished Versace gown was also wedding-worthy! It featured floral appliques and long fringing along the arms. It was styled perfectly with jewellery by Lorraine Schwartz.
Gisele Bündchen wore a beaded silver gown by Stella McCartney. The dress was made from organic silk and featured a very low cut back and glass bead embroidery. Teamed with Neil Lane jewellery, a marble and gold box clutch and a high ponytail, the dress could easily double as a bridal gown!
Our favourite look was by far Blake Lively’s opulent mermaid dress by Versace. Since the red carpet was actually blue, her gold frock with a blue feathered cascading train was the perfect match! The actress styled the dress with jewellery by Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira Jewels. She wore striking 82-carat Burma sapphire earrings and a 50-carat triple sapphire ring!
