Santorini, Greece

Santorini in Greece is one of world’s top locations for a destination wedding. The weather is perfect with about 330 days of sunshine per year, the water is crystal clear and ideal for swimming and water sports, while the landscape is truly stunning and the architecture is very unique.

Location

Santorini is a very original choice of destination, so your wedding celebration will definitely stand out and your friends and family will see it as a fun adventure. The island is located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of Greece’s mainland and it is the southernmost island of the Cyclades. It was formed in the 17th century B.C. after a big volcanic eruption and has the surface area of 73 square kilometers.

With a pleasant Mediterranean climate, Santorini has warm, sunny weather from April to October when the sky is perfectly clear and there is generally no chance of rainfall. It is therefore the perfect location for planning an outdoor wedding, but also an idyllic spot for your honeymoon or a romantic escape.

Attractions

Beautiful beaches with black, red and white sand or pebbles were made from solidified lava and are one of the biggest attractions of Santorini Island. Most of the beaches are located on the eastern and south-eastern side of the island and each of them is unique, offering stunning backdrops for your wedding photos.

The island features two great archaeological sites. The ancient city of Akrotiri is the most important prehistoric settlement found in the Eastern Mediterranean and Mesa Vouno dates from the 9th century B.C. You can also visit some of Santorini’s museums such as The Archeological Museum, The Museum of Prehistoric Terra, The Naval Museum, Santozeum, The Wine Museum and the Museum of Musical Instruments, or admire the orthodox and catholic churches and monasteries and their beautiful architecture.

To explore the island and its idyllic surroundings, you can book one of the guided tours, go hiking and discover hidden spots, or arrange a small excursion by boat. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Palea and Nea Kameni, two small volcanic islands nearby. You can even rent a boat and plan your own trip to search for new, exciting places.

Wedding Venues

Have your fairytale wedding on the beach or at a beautiful balcony overlooking the sea and magical volcanic landscape! You can have your reception at one of Santorini’s stylish restaurants, chic hotels, charming beach bars, old wineries or luxurious villas. With a spacious open-air lounge, big swimming pool, sweeping views of the blue sea and exquisite cuisine, Santorini Princess Hotel is a truly sensational location, but you can also celebrate with style at the glamorous La Maltese estate villa or Danna Villas where you may want to spend your honeymoon as well.

Santorini is well known for its exquisite food and wine from local farms and wineries and whichever location you choose for your wedding reception, rest assured that you will have a memorable dining experience. The cuisine is mainly based on the island’s agricultural products and includes healthy, organic meals prepared from Santorini’s fresh produce such as cherry tomatos, split peas, fresh cheese, capers, white aubergine, cucumbers, courgettes and watermelon. The Island’s wine making industry has a 3500 years long history and the volcanic terrain gives the grapes a very unique flavour.

Couples from all over the world are dreaming about a Santorini wedding and even though it requires a lot of planning, it is definitely one of the best places to get married. Organise an elopement or invite your closest friends and family and make your big day truly spectacular on this magnificent island.
