It was an honour last week to be asked by Michelle Andrews from Mamamia to provide our expert opinion of the three key wedding trends in 2017. We love seeing new styling coming through and look forward to presenting you with so many on-trend real weddings throughout the year.
1. Floral Styling – Greenery
The 2017 Pantone colour of the year is Greenery 15-0343 and if you head over to pantone.com you will find the following description of this zesty hue:
A fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore & renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage & the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath & reinvigorate.
- PANTONE
This is not only the colour of the year, but an emerging trend in wedding styling. Greenery in colour, foliage and design pairs perfectly with neutrals (think white and cream), metallics and the other emerging colour trend – a riotous explosion of bright colours.
Styling with flowers was ubiquitous in 2016 and is sure to continue in 2017. Floral walls, hanging installations and floral arbours will emerge with far greater emphasis on greenery rather then flowers. Many types of greenery will be used: eucalyptus leaves, ferns, grasses, ruscus and leaves.
Palms with oversized leaves, like the structural Monstera leaf, will be seen in lush chandeliers and hanging installations. Garlands of varying style and structure will feature as well as huge canopy installations above reception tables. Greenery will be used as a table runner on the reception tables, and sprays of greenery will decorate the wedding cake.
Hand illustrated greenery will feature on wedding stationery suites, place cards and seating charts. Greenery boutonnieres will complement modern suit styling for the men, and simple greenery bouquets will be carried by the ladies. Couples are being drawn to a cleaner look and more simple design aesthetic and greenery work well when styled this way.
Brushed metallic wedding styling will feature throughout 2017 in hues of rose gold, copper, bronze and pewter. Metallics will complement a simple background of cream, white, pale pink, or champagne.
Metallic elements will be complemented by layers of textured fabrics in velvet and linen. Textural metallic or sequined tablecloths will dress the reception tables providing a shimmering backdrop for simple floral centrepieces and elegant cut crystal candle holders.
Metallic Tiffany chairs will raise the glamour stakes, while cutlery in the chosen metal will frame metallic-edged charger plates. Wedding cakes will feature metallic layers in the chosen hue.
Elegant metallic dresses flooded the runways during Bridal Fashion Week, in the most delicate gold, silver and champagne hues. Accessories should be kept simple when wearing a metallic gown to allow the dress to shine. This look is sophisticated, tactile and oh-so-chic!
2017 will see the continuance of a couple’s love of a destination wedding in a unique venue: barns, farm sheds, stables, tents, and tepees. Gardens, farms, private estates, eco retreats, and wineries will remain popular location choices.
However, there will be a return to more traditional wedding venues: restaurants, reception venues, and hotels. Chic, modern, tone-on-tone styling will feature (think white on white), with depth and dimension created through textural fabrics and layering.
Destination wedding weekends are an emerging trend with the festivities extending to a pre-wedding get together the night before the wedding and a recovery, or morning-after, brunch the next day.
